It is estimated that about three-fourths of the world's population are farmers and about one-fourth of the total land surface of the world is used for farming.
这是文中的一句话我总感觉 population是否要加s或者说是把are改为is呢?
文中说population做居民讲,那就更应该用populations啊?
为什么

1.population意思是“人口/居民”,但是它一般没有复数形式populations.
2.如果population做句子主语,谓语动词的数一般分为以下两种情况讨论：
1）如果指的是“整体的人口/居民”,则谓语动词只用复数形式,如：
The population of China is now 1.3 billion.
2）但是如果句中的主语指的是“部分的人口（不是整体的人口）”时,则谓语动词一般用复数形式.
如：About one-third of the population of China are farmers.
Half the population of the town are fishers.
也就是说,如果句子主语是“一半/部分/大多数/几分之几/百分之几等不是整体的人口”时,谓语动词一律用复数形式,但是population本身不用复数形式.
