Schoolchildren in Shanghai have been ranked the best in the world at maths,science and reading by a leading global study of secondary school (中学) performance.
The study is known as PISA (Program for International Student Assessment,国际学生评估项目).It is organized once a year by the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development,国际经济合作组织),a Paris-based group that includes the world’s major industrial powers.Almost half a million schoolchildren in more than 70 countries took part in this year’s study.It was the first time that mainland China had participated in it.
More than 5,000 15-year-old students in Shanghai sat (参加考试) the two-hour PISA exam and surprised experts with their excellent performance.The students were in a class of their own in maths; they greatly outperformed second-placed Singapore.The students in Shanghai also beat the Finnish students to top spot in science and the South Korean students to get first place for reading.
More than a quarter of the students in Shanghai showed high-level mathematical thinking skills in the solution of complex problems.
The OECD praised China for working to improve its education system.But Chinese parents and education experts don’t take the results seriously.Chinese students work extra long hours on school days and continue to have classes on weekends and holidays.It is hard for them not to perform well on tests,said Xiong Bingqi,an education expert.
