When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire,take down this book,
And slowly read,and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once,and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur,a little sadly,how Love fled

爱尔兰诗人叶芝（YEATS）在1923年58岁写自传.叶芝在自传中慨叹生命与艺术间的矛盾,慨叹年轻时形体美好而心智幼稚,年老时则心智成熟而形体衰朽.
叶芝是和永恒拔河的人.据称,他是西方诗坛极为罕见,忠于艺术以迄老死的诗人,死前48小时仍在忙于校对几篇未定的稿件.那时的他已经很老了.73岁.精神正如1923年领取诺贝尔文学奖感言般：一度我也曾英俊像个少年,但那时我生涩的诗脆弱不堪,我的诗神也很苍老,现在我已苍老且患风湿,形体不直一顾,但我的缪思却年轻起来了,我甚至相信,她永恒地向青春的岁月前进像使维登堡灵视所见的那些天使一样.叶芝死于1938年.
