Take a look under most teens’ beds and you’re likely to find old socks, some dust bunnies or maybe a secret diary that’s meant to be kept hidden from parents. But for 17-year-old Sara Volz, instead of using the space under her bed to collect dust, she uses it to grow biofuels.
After beating out 1,700 other nationwide whiz kids and winning $100,000 in the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search* (英特尔少年科学天才奖比赛), the 17-year-old American girl used the money to turn her bedroom into a groundbreaking algae biofuel lab. She wants to take algae to a new level. She believes that the natural oils produced by algae can be converted into biofuels. And the biofuels can be used to power cars, buses, etc.
Using the resources of her lab-based bedroom, Sara is working hard to produce biofuels. She is also trying to make biofuels more cost-efficient by increasing their natural oil production. The teen even adjusted her sleep schedule to fit her work.
Next fall, the genius high schooler will head to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), but she isn’t making a big deal about being a teen phenom. She said, “As human beings, we are scientists because we’re curious and we question. That’s what science is.”
While it’s unclear if Sara will be moving her algae into her college dorm room, we can’t wait to see what she will do next.
