The topographical setting of Rio de Janeiro is a major challenge for installing adequate transportationsystems but thus far Rio’s four-zone plan has been able tosupport fairly strong transport systems.An existing corridorof high-capacity rail and metrosystems in addition to severalmotorways links three of the four Olympic zones.With the completion of the western corridor,all four zones will be connected.To better link three of the four zones,Rio proposed the construction of 100 km of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes.The fourth link,Copacabana-CityCentre-Maracana-Deodoro,would be served by improvedmetro and suburban rail.Out of a total transport investmentof USD 2.6 billion,USD 2.1 billionis budgeted for general transport developments,including three BRT lines.ApproximatelyUSD 500 million is allocated for twoadditional Olympic BRT corridors.Based on proven Brazilian transport innovation and developments,the proposed extensive BRT system would provide sufficient solutions to the capacityrequired of an Olympic city.
