The cost of safely disposing of the toxic chemicals is approximately (five times what) the company paid (to purchase it.) 答案说那个to purchase it错了,错在哪儿?我觉得那个five times what有误,我觉得那个what应该改成how much吧?

to purchase it 的确错了,因为代词it 指代不明.
purchase 买,买的东西肯定是前面出现的chemicals,但chemicals 是复数形式,所以it和它无法形成指代关系.把it 改为them 还行.
What 有时候就等于how much
如：How much did you pay for the shirt?= What did you pay for the shirt?
