Many students are required to evaluate their teachers but some teachers complain that these evaluations are unfair and can in some cases lead to the dismissal of a teacher.What is your opinion about students' evaluations on their teachers?
Students' Evaluation of Teachers Is Not a Good Thing
While most universities require their students to evaluate teachers and while it sounds good in principle,in practice I do not think that is is a good thing.
First,because it creates a fear factor in teachers' lives.Teachers know that if they are given poor evaluation then they may get reprimanded,demoted or even fired.Therefore,this fear can cause some teachers to effectively say to their students,"If you are nice to me,then I will be nice to you." Teachers will then give higher marks to their students on order to receive good evaluations.This leads to grade inflation and does not mirror the students' ture performance.Second,it is a witch-hunt for disgruntled students.If students think that a teacher is too strict with them or there is a clash of personalities then it is easy fot them to give him a low evaluation.This means tha tthe good but strict teacher is in danger of losing his job.Lazy and poor students who do not work hard and consequently are given low marks could get their revenge on their teacher by giving him a bad evaluation.
In couclusion,the evaluation of teachers by students could lead to grade inflation and provide an unfair outlet for disgruntled students.
