powder was obtained as a B-N-O intermediate product,which might
have the formula B4N3O2H [21a].The yellow powder was further cal-
cined at 600 \x1eC in air for 2 h to give a white B-N-O product containing
more oxygen.The as-prepared B-N-O precursor was put into a big
graphite crucible.A small BN crucible containing AlCl3 was placed
above this crucible.The components were enclosed in a graphite sus-
ceptor and heated in an induction furnace.The furnace was evacuated
and introduced into a pure Ar gas flow.The furnace was heated step
by step.When the temperature was about 950 \x1eC the gas flow was
switched to pure NH3/N2 (N2 100 mL min±1,NH3 200 mL min±1).
After that the temperature was increased to,and maintained at,
1200 \x1eC for about 1.2 h.The temperature was then increased further.
The position of the big graphite crucible containing the B-N-O precur-
sor was adjusted to ensure that the B-N-O precursor was heated at
1600 \x1eC.The atmosphere was a N2/NH3 flow with the same rate as in
the first stage.After about an hour coaxial tubular single-crystalline
cubic-AlN nanotubes with a BN coating were obtained.The products
were examined on an X-ray diffractometer (RINT 2200HF) and a
high-resolution transmission field emission electron microscope
(HRTEM) (JEM-3000F) attached to an X-ray energy dispersive spec-
trometer (EDS).
