中国音乐从很早已经掌握七声音阶,但一直偏好比较和谐的五声音阶,重点在五声中发展音乐,同时将中心放在追求旋律、节奏变化,轻视和声的作用.中国音乐的发展方向和西方音乐不同,西方音乐从古希腊的五声音阶,逐渐发展到七声音阶,直到十二平均律；从单声部发展到运用和声.所以西方音乐如果说像一堵厚重的墙壁,上面轮廓如同旋律,砖石如同墙体,即使轮廓平直只要有和声也是墙.中国音乐则不同,好像用线条画出的中国画,如果没有轮廓则不成其为音乐,但和声是可有可无的.所以西方人听中国音乐“如同飘在空中的线”,而从未接触西方音乐的中国人则觉得西方音乐如同“混杂的噪声”.
