Two days before Earth Day,columnist Doug Bandow spoke to students about the failures of the current political attitudes about the environment and promoted the free market as a means to solving environmental problems.
The speech yesterday was organized by the Penn State Young Americans for Freedom and its national co-sponsor,the Young America's Foundation.About 100 people attended.
Practically everyone supports protecting the environment,Bandow said,so lawmakers use environmental issues as a way to win support for their political platforms.Meanwhile, government policies fail to help the environment,he said.
One of many examples Bandow cited was legislative support of smokestack scrubbers in power plants,a practice he said serves mainly as a way to protect the jobs of coal workers while costing power companies billions of dollars.
Other times, poorly researched environmental policies have unintended results, such as tiny fuel-efficient cars being more dangerous than larger vehicles,he said.
"There's a lot of these things that have utterly perverse consequences that nobody thinks through," Bandow said.
Bandow served on President Ronald Reagan's Office of Policy Development and is a senior fellow of the Cato Institute,a Libertarian think tank.
Promotional fliers around campus attacking environmentalists motivated a few environmental activists to attend the speech, but some said the speech did not live up to its billing.
"I thought he was going to say much more ridiculous things than he did," said Matt McLaughlin (sophomore-secondary education),a member of Eco-Action.
Bandow simply supports different kinds of government intervention, not free market solutions,McLaughlin said.
John Kepner,a recent Penn State graduate and another member of Eco-Action,was skeptical of Bandow's attitudes about global warming.
"He speaks in defense of the free market when it's corporations that are doing most of the environmental damage today," Kepner said.
But YAF supported Bandow's efforts.
"Some people didn't get what they were expecting, but I think Mr.Bandow made the argument for keeping government out of a regulatory capacity very well," said Rick Solman,YAF chair.
