很久很久以前,上帝把地球上的动物们召集到一起开会.会议快结束时.上帝指了指自己脚下一个看起来有点笨重的东西说：“我这里有一样礼物想赐给各位.如果你们谁喜欢,就可以把它拾起来放在背上.不过先提醒大家,一旦谁背上它,就永远也取不下来.”
动物们听到有礼物可以领,都十分开心.他们争先恐后地挤到上帝面前,可没想到礼物居然是放在地上的那个怪东西,不禁面面相觑,打起了退堂鼓,心里想：“把这个家伙放到背上,搞不好连走路都会累得半死!更可怕的是,一旦背上它,这负担就永远也没有尽头了.”
就这样,动物们犹豫了一阵之后,又都回到了自己的座位.这时候,一只小鸟走了出来.它看了看地上的礼物,心里想,上帝从来没有欺骗和亏待过我们.眼前这东西看起来虽然笨重,但它也是上帝的恩赐呀,应该不会有什么麻烦的.
于是,小鸟捡起地上的东西,背在背上.没想到,这个礼物一接触她的后背就长了上去!在其它动物惊诧的注视下,小鸟试着扇动它,结果不但没感觉到沉重,反而慢慢地学会了飞行!而那些放弃翅膀的动物们,看着这个神奇的礼物,后悔也来不及了.
