Wonderful enjoyment of different characters
I have read the famous Shakespearean play The Merchant of Venice, which is said to be one of the best of Shakespearean dramas. It not only haswell-conceived plots and lively characteristics, but it’s also filled in beautiful words and strong poetry. It has both romantic and reality factors.
What attracts me mostly is that Shakespeare portrayed humanities exactly and brilliantly. He laughed at people in the play, but he also felt sorry for them-sorry for the entire world, good and bad, rich and poor, young and old. All the people were real. No one was all good, or all bad. For example, there is a Jew called Shylock in this play, who is a money-lender and a cruel man – everyone hates him. But in the end, when Shylock loses everything, you have to fell sorry for him. He is just a sad old man.
Antonio, a merchant of the city of Venice, was liked by everyone because he was always ready to help others. He had many merchant ships which traded with other countries. At the time of this story, they were all at sea. Bassanio, Antonio’s best friend, was in love with Portia, a rich and beautiful lady who also loved him. Sadly, he could not propose marriage to Portia for he himself had no money. So he asked Antonio to lend him three thousand ducats. As Antonio did not have any money just then, he went to Shylock. The point is Shylock now hated Antonio for having been scolded being greedy and cruel many times publicly by him. However, Shylock agreed to lend him the money on one condition. In the agreement, Antonio made a promise to allow Shylock to take a pound of his flesh from what ever part of his body if he did not pay the money back at the end of three months. Antonio agreed, took the money and gave it to Bassanio. Unfortunately, at the time when Bassanio and Portia were getting married, a letter arrived from Antonio saying that all his ships had been lost at sea and that he would have to give Shylock a pound of his flesh. He wished to see Bassanio before he died. After their wedding, Portia told Bassanio to go to his friend at once. Then she thought of a clever plan to save Antonio...
It is said that Portia is the most wonderful and successful woman in the whole Works of Shakespeare. Being intelligent, beautiful, smart, resolute, mercy and virtuous, she is a considerable idealized character, showing the hanker of people with humanism in the period of renaissance. And the declamation in the court mostly incarnates them. She wore lawyer’s clothes, entered the court and took her seat as judge, which was arranged in advance. At first, she gave Shylock the impression of sitting on his side, and then she cut the point that Antonio had promised to give a pound of his flesh. But he had not promised to give any of his blood. If Shylock let one drop of blood fall, he’ll lose all his land and his money. Of course, Shylock failed.
We can also discover other characters’ different characteristics. Reading the play is really an enjoyment.
