Significant improvements to the activity of skeletal copper catalysts for the water gas shift reaction were achieved by adding small amounts of Cr2O3 to the surface of copper.The presence of Cr2O3 also promoted the activities of skeletalcopper catalysts for both methanol synthesis and methanol steam reforming reactions.Overloading the Cu surface with Cr2O3 reduced the copper surface area,thereby reducing the positive catalytic effect.
Negligible activities were observed for the water gas shift reaction when greater than 1.0 wt.% cobalt additive was deposited on the surface of skeletal Cu.TPR and N2O titration measurements suggest that the Co additive acts as metallic cobalt in skeletal copper catalysts for methanol synthesis and related reactions.This investigation of the role of additives in skeletal Cu catalysts for methanol steam reforming and water gas shift reactions suggests that a formaldehyde intermediate is present in the methanol steam reforming reaction and that hydrolysis of formaldehyde to formic acid dominates over dimerization of formaldehyde to methyl formate in the reaction mechanism.
